Low Country Rooms
a photo series documenting the interiors of the Low Country region
Hello. I’m real. I’d like to explain myself. Since graduating from college, I’ve been searching for a full time position, and have let my identity been consumed by monitoring the revolving societal collapse. I’ve created the following photo series, Low Country Rooms, as a means to distract myself from this world.
Like my previous work, I was your faithful concubine, I’ve leaned on photography in Low Country Rooms as a medium to bridge this psychological divide between the reader and I. In this photo series, I’m exploring the interiors of homes within the “Low Country” — referring to the stretch of the East Coast between Charleston, South Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida.
The Low Country is one of most sparsely populated regions of the nation, due to the scarcity of stable land along the marshy coastline. This region has been obscured by both time and distance from the heart of the nation; we speak with an accent inflected by the Gullah-Geechee creole, our architecture is informed by the traditions of British Colonial architecture, we pray to perverse forms of Gods, and we decorate our homes with cheap goods. And through photography, I’d like to capture how these traditions persist in relative isolation.
The inherent incommunicability of the Low Country has sparked my desire to start this substack Unknown Empires as a more cerebral travel guide exploring how place and feeling intersect. I encourage you, the reader, to try and describe a place. Any place works. It’s difficult right?
